Simplistic tools, such as the banking network's Address Verification System (AVS), perform very limited screening and therefore often let a significant volume of fraud slip through while incorrectly declining legitimate orders. With CyberSource Smart Authorization, more legitimate orders can be identified and automatically accepted with a high degree of confidence. Specifically, Smart Authorization performs the following tests:
- Complete address validation: Verifies that both the cardholder billing and shipping addresses are legitimate and deliverable.
- Phone number validation: Verifies that the customer's area code is legitimate and correctly matches the cardholder's address.
- Data analysis: Analyzes customer data to determine if there are "red flags" such as obscenities or nonsensical data that can indicate fraudulent transactions.
- Negative file check: Reviews each transaction against a file of historically "bad" addresses and credit card numbers hosted by CyberSource on behalf of the merchant.
