As the world goes digital, merchants who can accept electronic payments quickly and seamlessly will thrive

At Visa, we’re continuously exploring new ways to make it easier for merchants to do business. That includes pioneering Tap to Phone: a new technology that enables merchants to accept digital payments via mobile devices they already own.

We now share Tap to Phone (TTP) technology across our Visa partner network and beyond, resulting in successful Tap to Phone launches across the world. That includes GP tom from Global Payments, a leading worldwide provider of payment technology and software solutions. GP tom is a bespoke Tap to Phone solution using Yazara, a Visa Ready certified Tap to Phone solution provider, to process their NFC-based contactless payments.

Tap to Phone: meeting the need for simpler digital payment acceptance

Right now, more than 250 million small merchants worldwide still don’t accept electronic payments1—put off by hardware costs and traditional POS solutions that don’t suit the on-the-go nature of micro businesses, such as food stalls and taxis.

At the same time, many established enterprises are also looking for flexible digital alternatives to traditional POS devices to provide a better portable, customer payment experience in-store and while mobile.

Visa Tap to Phone is a new SoftPOS technology that enables merchants of all sizes to accept contactless payments in-store and on the go, by turning any NFC-enabled mobile device into a digital point-of-sale terminal.

A bespoke Tap to Phone solution by Global Payments

A great example of Tap to Phone technology in action is GP tom, a proprietary solution developed by Global Payments. It’s a SoftPOS solution that Global Payments merchants can use to accept digital payments via any NFC-enabled mobile devices. It’s a unique solution that combines security, a simple user experience, and speed to quickly accept payments without any specialized hardware.

GP tom utilizes Yazara, a Visa-certified Tap to Phone solution provider, to process contactless NFC-based payments. This is a good example of bringing innovation to life and developing solutions that merchants and their consumers want.

Some of the highest security standards, on standard mobile devices

GP tom is fully compliant with PCI’s MPoC standard. It’s been through security evaluations from accredited labs and includes security measures such as a moving PIN entry pad.

Accessible on all Android devices

The point of GP tom is for it to be accessible. The solution can run on any Android NFC-enabled phone or tablet, including Huawei devices, with iOS SDK next on the roadmap.

Additional payment methods baked in

In addition to accepting cards, merchants can use GP tom to accept alternative payment methods, such as mobile wallets, QR codes, and even cryptocurrencies.

Transparent, competitive pricing

Users of GP tom don’t have to pay any device, monthly, or activation fees. Instead, they simply pay commission fees linked to their monthly transaction amounts.

An easy-to-use interface for merchants and shoppers alike

GP tom has a simple interface and provides a seamless on-boarding experience for merchants. It then provides an equally seamless experience for shoppers, including features such as digital receipts.

Supported with unparalleled TTP expertise

When you combine the expertise of Global Payments, Visa and Yazara, the result is a highly successful implementation with full, comprehensive support.

PIN for ultimate security

GP tom’s security features include a moving 10-digit PIN pad. When each digit is entered, the PIN entry screen moves, blocking any PIN-capturing applications or fraudsters.

Consumer education supported by Visa

One of the challenges of any new payment technology is convincing consumers it’s secure—particularly when shoppers are being asked to tap their card on an unknown phone. Visa has long helped the industry drive understanding, trust, and adoption amongst consumers, including supporting Global Payments and Yazara with TTP consumer education campaigns.

A growing solution for merchants of all sizes

Where GP tom is live, we are now able to serve any merchant, any size, in any segment. Our SoftPOS is already serving over 220 Merchant Category Codes.

A one-stop solution for small, micro, and nano merchants

Merchants on the go, such as food trucks, taxis, and delivery drivers, and small merchants such as local retailers, cafés, and hotels/accommodation, all benefit from the simplicity and value of GP tom.

An ancillary solution for established enterprises

With its easy API integration, GP tom enables larger organizations to complement existing POS estates with a mobile solution to improve the consumer experience—for example by enabling instant payments anywhere in store—and even capitalizing on new payment opportunities, such as payments from anywhere at events (e.g., street food festivals or seasonal fairs).
