Merchants should plan migration to the EMV® 3DS prior to October 2021 to minimize impact to their business, including risk review and mitigation. Learn why.
What’s happening to 3-D Secure?
3-D Secure helps to minimize costly fraudulent transactions by adding an extra layer of protection to the payment process. This protocol enables issuers to authenticate the cardholder using various available methods—from a one-time password to biometrics. Successful authentication helps confirm that the transaction comes from a real cardholder. Making it more likely that the transaction will be authorized.
What 3-D Secure authentication does
The 3-D Secure protocol was first designed to support cardholder authentication for browser-based eCommerce transactions. With the advent of the new and additional features in 3-D Secure, 3DS 1.0 will be phased out starting October 2021 with eventual sunset in October 2022.
Merchants should plan migration to the 3DS protocol prior to October 2021 to minimize impact to their business, including risk review and mitigation.
Benefits of 3-D Secure
There are strong benefits to upgrading to 3-D Secure including optimized customer experience on mobile devices and the additional data which is sent through the request allowing improved risk modeling and review by the issuers. This ultimately leads to stronger confidence for issuers to approve the authorization request. 3DS helps to reduce fraud while at the same time providing an improved customer authentication experience.
Why update to 3-D Secure?
3-D Secure provides more data (10x more1) for use in the risk-based review, an enhanced user experience with minimal step-up challenges and can be used on mobile and IoT devices.
Benefits of 3-D Secure:
- Provides 10 times more data1 to issuers for improved modeling and decision making
- Enhances authentication experience on mobile devices
- Risk-based review means less friction and challenges for customers
- Helps reduce fraud while minimizing false declines
- Supports browser and app-based authentication
